Training
FRESHJUNKIE Racing is committed to helping remove barriers to getting out and getting active. Since the very beginning we've provided opportunities to get involved in walking and running. Now through our partner non-profit, the Run Gulf Coast Foundation and the Run for All program, FRESHJUNKIE Racing is making even bigger efforts to give everyone a chance to move more. Part of the Run for All is to provide training programs easily accessible to get prepared.
We are excited to have partnered with The Stride Shop to provide FREE training programs for the Half Marathon, 10 Miler, and 5K distances.
It is our pleasure to help you train for such an incredible event. After last year's race, we heard from many of you about our training plan - the good and the bad. So, here are a few things to keep in mind this year:
- Yes, the warmup is important. It makes our bodies more efficient during the run and does a great job of preparing us mentally for what is to come.
- No, the striders are not required. For runners who have built a decent base of running (6 months or more before starting to train for this race), striders can be a very useful tool to build speed and cardiovascular fitness. However, you will still be prepared for the race if you follow the training plan without doing the striders
- Walking is completely acceptable. Many of your training runs will likley start with temperatures in the 70s or even 80s. If you feel the need to stop for a walk break, to hydrate, or just to catch your breath it is not cheating.
- The training guide is adaptable. If you need to juggle days or even weeks, the most important thing is that you listen to your body and get the large majority of your mileage in each week. Just doing the long run is not a great way to prepare for a race.
- Rest days are important! They may even be more important than some run days. Your body needs this time to adapt to the demands and get stronger. Do not skip them!
- Cross training, strength, and mobility workouts should complement your running. Adding in high intensity exercise or a lot of impact exercises is not ideal as you increase your run training.
If you have specific questions about training, you want a strength program tailored to your body, or you want a coach to guide you through this process please reach out to us at thestrideshop@gmail.com.
